Comparison of Pictory vs MakeReels.in for product video generation

Short answer: Pictory is a solid script-to-video tool, and it does pull your product images from your website — but it assembles them without context, so the output feels like a PowerPoint deck, not a video. If you want a reel that tells a story around your product, MakeReels.in generates custom, contextual visuals from a product link in about 60 seconds. If you want a talking-head explainer or a tutorial video from a script, Pictory is the better fit.

Full disclosure before we go any further: we build MakeReels.in. To keep this comparison honest, we ran both tools on the same real product - this decorative home-decor piece from The Artment on Amazon.

How we tested

We took one real Amazon listing and tried to produce a short promotional video for it in each tool, the way a small e-commerce brand would: paste the product link, generate, and export. No professional editing, no external footage.

Pictory review: what it gets right

Script-first workflow

Pictory's core loop is script-to-video. You write (or generate) a script, and the platform gives you good controls to modify it based on intent (marketing, tutorial, etc.) and voice (informational, conversational, etc.).

A small but genuinely useful feature: the script editor shows an estimated video duration before you generate anything. In our test the timer was spot on. You can budget video length upfront instead of discovering it after a render.

Onboarding that does real work

Pictory's onboarding scrapes your website to pull your logo and brand colours, and asks for your profession and tone. The colours it extracted for us were wrong, but the idea is right.

Voiceovers are excellent

The AI voices appear to be powered by ElevenLabs, and there's nothing to complain about. We found several good Indian-sounding voices, and overall quality is high across the board.

The small things

  • Aspect-ratio switching (16:9 ↔ 9:16 ↔ 1:1) is one click and just works; great for repurposing a YouTube video into a reel.
  • Adding new scenes automatically inserts filler words so the voiceover flows naturally across the cut.
  • Talking heads are added by simple drag and drop.
  • The exported video is also hosted as a shareable link you can embed anywhere — a huge win if you distribute content across platforms.

Pictory review: where it falls short for products

The context problem: videos that feel like a PPT

This is the dealbreaker. To be fair, Pictory does pull your product images from your website — the product appears in the video. The problem is what it does with them: each scene is randomly matched to your script, not to any real understanding of the product, and the images are stitched together slide by slide.

The result feels like a PowerPoint presentation with a voiceover, not a product video. There's no build-up, no context connecting one shot to the next, and stock filler clips sit awkwardly next to your product images. For an explainer this is tolerable; for a product video it defeats the purpose. A buyer gets static images they could have seen on the listing, with none of the storytelling that makes videos convert.

Confusing templates

After finishing the script, Pictory showed us 4 templates and a "none" option. We picked "none" hoping to see more of the product's own images and videos — that's not what it does, and output quality dropped noticeably. If you use Pictory, always pick a relevant template.

UX friction

  • Talking heads work well but need polish. We placed one in the wrong spot and then had to manually reposition the head in every single clip this becomes tedious fast.
  • Brand colour changes are localised to a single element, so applying your brand across a video means repeating the change everywhere.
  • No audio controls. We couldn't reposition audio or find any equalisation settings.
  • The interface is dead simple, good for beginners, mildly frustrating for technical users who want more control.

Cost

Exporting our single test video with a watermark cost 45 credits, which works out to roughly ₹300–₹1400 per video depending on the plan. But the silver lining is that you can experiment without using any credits, you only pay for the video that you export.

Here's the video Pictory produced in our test — judge for yourself.

MakeReels.in: built for product videos

MakeReels.in approaches the problem from the opposite direction. Instead of stitching script-matched images into slides, it builds a video around your product.

  • Input is a product link, images, or a plain prompt. Paste your Amazon or Shopify listing and the AI generates visuals featuring the actual product — hero shots, environment shots, closing displays.
  • No script setting. This is the honest trade-off: you steer with prompts rather than editing a script line by line. If you need precise word-level control over narration, Pictory's script editor is better.
  • Draft mode and best mode. Iterate cheaply in draft mode until the story works, then render the final cut with the most expressive AI models.
  • AI voiceovers are generated with the video, and a typical reel is ready in about 60 seconds.
  • 300 free credits to start, so you can test it on your own product before paying anything.

The things a converting product video needs — a product hero shot, relatable context, and a strong closing display of the product — are exactly what slideshow-style tools can't deliver and what MakeReels.in is designed around. (For the full framework, see our guide on how to make reels for an e-commerce product.)

Verdict: which one should you use?

Choose Pictory if you're making tutorials, marketing explainers, or repurposing blog posts into video. The script workflow, voiceovers, talking heads and hosted export links are genuinely good.

Choose MakeReels.in if you're selling a physical product and want a video that tells a story around it. A slideshow of listing images can't sell a product the way a contextual, cinematic reel can.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Pictory good for product videos?
Pictory is great for script-based explainer and tutorial videos, with high-quality ElevenLabs voiceovers and simple aspect-ratio switching. It does pull product images from your website, but it assembles them with stock footage matched to your script text, without real context about the product. The result feels like a PowerPoint slideshow rather than a product video.
What is the difference between Pictory and MakeReels.in?
Pictory converts a written script into a video using your product images plus stock footage, but stitches them together slide-by-slide without product context, which works for explainers but not for showcasing a specific product. MakeReels.in is built specifically for product videos: you paste a product link or images and it generates custom, contextual visuals featuring your actual product, with AI voiceover, in about 60 seconds.
How much does it cost to export a video on Pictory?
In our test, exporting a single video with a watermark cost 45 credits, which works out to roughly ₹300 to ₹1400 depending on your Pictory plan. MakeReels.in offers 300 free credits to start, and a cheaper draft mode for iterating before a final render.
Which AI video tool should I use for e-commerce listings?
For Shopify or Amazon product listings, use a tool that builds a story around your actual product rather than stitching images and stock clips into a slideshow. MakeReels.in takes a product link and produces a contextual reel featuring the real product. Pictory is a better fit for tutorials, marketing explainers and text-heavy content where a slide-style format is acceptable.
